LIKELIHOOD OF FINDING A MATCH OUTSIDE FAMILY FOR PATIENTS
Updated: Aug 11, 2019
Gragert and colleagues in this study (goo.gl/Hys6Bw) report on probability of finding a suitable donor from NMDP adult donor and banked cord blood searches. Indians are included in category of South Asians. Whites (W), South Asians (SA)
NMDP has 10.5 million volunteer donors and 200,000 cord blood units listed
Adults donors: 8/8 allele match 75% (W), 33% (SA); 7/8 or better 97% (W), 84% (SA)
Cord blood units (5/6 or better match with 2.5E07/kg or more TNC): less than 20 y - 87% (W), 73% (SA); =/>20 y 66% (W), 41% (SA)
When a search is conducted, how often is the donor available (by donor ethnicity) - 51% (W), 29% (SA)
Bottom-line: The likelihood of finding a match with the use of a search strategy in which an 8/8 HLA-matched donor is sought first, then a 7/8 HLA-matched donor, and thereafter a cord-blood unit (4/6 or better) with an adequate cell dose is almost 100% for South Asians. goo.gl/l6NpuK
